QUESTION

My dad was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. I’m not sure how to process this.

My dad was diagnosed today. We don’t even know what type of cancer he has. It’s in his lymph nodes, and we suspect prostate and maybe has spread to his bone due to severe pain.

I’m not sure how to process this. I live states away and just want to be there with him.

RESPONSE FROM DR. SAGER
Dear

,

So sorry to hear, but hang in there. As an oncologist, I would recommend that he is seen at a NCI accredited cancer center if possible (https://www.cancer.gov/research/infrastructure/cancer-centers). Newly diagnosed prostate cancer can almost always be treated with hormone blockers that help for many months to years. Bone mets can be treated with some radiation to relieve the pain (and have him request a pain consult too). I do recommend having an advocate help, but a friend can be fine until you can organize the trip. I hope he will make it past this difficult time, and have a lot more time to spend with you.

Best Wishes,
