The IMpower151 trial (NCT04194203) combined atezolizumab plus bevacizumab and chemotherapy for first-line metastatic non-squamous NSCLC for 305 patients in China. Patients in the ABCPem/Pac arm (atezolizumab, bevacizumab, carboplatin and pemetrexed/paclitaxel) achieved a median INV-PFS of 9.5 months versus 7.1 months for the BCPem/Pac arm, with similar OS (20.7 vs. 18.7 months). Adverse events that led to discontinuation of any treatment were observed in 23% and 15% of patients receiving ABCPem/Pac and BCPem/Pac, respectively.
Take home
The findings indicate the atezolizumab plus bevacizumab and chemotherapy shows ~2 month improvement in mPFS compared to bevacizumab and chemotherapy with similar tolerability. Unfortunately the overall survival benefits did not look significant, so the combination is unlikely to become standard of care.
